Annual Report

1. STAY ON TOPIC
This is a list about children's book illustration and the complicated art of earning one's living from it. Please don't discuss religion, tropical fish, poodle proclivities, etc., unless related to art in an interesting or fun way.  If you feel compelled to post something off topic, please include "OT" in the subject title.

Politics may be discussed ONLY IF it's an issue that directly impacts children's illustrators. NO partisan politics. If you'd like to provide information in support of particular legislation, either post a link or take the discussion off list.

2. CHANGE THE SUBJECT TITLE
Always change the subject title when you're changing the subject, so a discussion of NC Wyeth doesn't carry the subject title "toxic pastel dust hazards" from three days previous, or the ambiguous "digest 7895."

3. IS YOUR POST OF INTEREST TO THE ENTIRE LIST?
Whatever you write to the list will be read by many busy people, so please make it worthwhile. If your post is of interest to just one person, send it to them privately, not to the listserv. Members are encouraged to forge new friendships within the PicBookArts community, but posts of a personal nature should be done off-list.

4. ASSURE THAT EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO
Please include the pertinent portion of the post you're responding to so everyone knows what you're talking about.  Avoid including the entire previous post, especially if it's long.  Set your browser to use "Internet" quoting.

5. MAKE SURE TO ADDRESS YOUR POST PROPERLY
Use the address <PicBookArts@mail-list.com> to send email to the list. Hitting the Reply button will send your response to the entire list. If you want to send your response privately to the individual, please use just their e-mail address.

6. KEEP YOUR POSTS APPROPRIATE
Try to limit "Me too!", "Welcome", "Congratulations" or other singular-worded posts. Post those privately. Please avoid, "Oh, my Aunt Mabel is from there!" type postings. No spamming, sending junk mail, virus warnings, forwarding of Erma Bombeck type jokes, chain letters, digital greeting cards or other useless information to the list, unless it's about art.

7. RESPECT OTHER MEMBERS
Absolutely no flaming, profanity or rudeness.  Please exercise diplomacy, tact, thoughtfulness, self-restraint and respect for other's point of view.  It's possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Remember that online communication always tends to exaggerate feelings.  Members who flame others run the risk of their posts being moderated, or removal from PicBookArts.

Anyone sending emails to members either onlist or privately that are obscene, sexually suggestive or explicit, will be immediately removed from the listserv. Anyone receiving harassing e-mails from listmates should contact the Listserv Committee Members immediately at listcom@picturebookartists.org

8. SHARE AT YOUR OWN RISK
Don't include personal addresses or phone numbers except in private e-mails. Because there's no way we can ensure confidential material posted to the list will remain that way, share at your own risk.  No doubt we'd all appreciate the information, and in an ideal world it would stay private, but be aware that what you say may get back to who you're talking about. Share only if you're willing to stand behind your words and face any consequences.

9. DISCUSSING PRICING AND POLICIES
You can state, "I have accepted this amount for this contract" or "my contract reads as such," as long as you do not have a non-disclosure clause in your contract. You can ask, "What fee has anyone received for a particular job?" and someone can reply, "I received $xxxx."

Because of Federal antitrust laws, you CANNOT say, "You shouldn't accept less than $xxxx for the job." You cannot suggest or instruct that everyone agree to accept no less than a certain price or terms. You cannot make an agreement with another artist that you BOTH will accept no less than a certain price or terms. You cannot instruct others on how their contracts SHOULD read.

10. TECHNICAL ISSUES
Any HTML coding will be automatically stripped from email messages, as html can contain viruses. URLS will automatically become operational if you include http:// and leave a blank space, tab or carriage return on both sides of the link.

Attachments will not be accepted by the listserv. Files for sharing may be posted to the member's own web space, after which others can be notified of the web address. If you don't have your own web space, contact the Webmaster at kevan@oddisgood.com.

Technical questions about the list should be sent to board@picturebookartists.org

11.SUGGESTING IDEAS FOR PBAA
We encourage members to share their ideas for PBAA with the board. No member may incur any expenses or take any action on behalf of PBAA without prior email authorization from the Board of Directors.

We want this list to be a pleasant place for everyone to freely express themselves on the subject of children's book illustration. Deliberate abuse of the rules may result in a warning or removal from the list.

If you have any questions, please contact the board at board@picturebookartists.org
